Message:

I am writing to you, both as a constituent and as an advocate for the community of individuals impacted by liver disease, to urge you to become a cosponsor of the Liver Illness Visibility, Education, and Research (LIVER) Act introduced by Representative Nydia Velázquez. The bill aims to help people of all ages, lifestyles, and ethnic backgrounds reduce their risk for liver cancer and related risk factors like viral hepatitis and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) also known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Liver disease leads to liver cancer and often transplantation. In fact, liver cancer is associated with hepatitis B in 15 percent of cases. Also, experts predict NASH/MASH could increase by over 50 percent by 2030, an especially somber prediction knowing that 10 percent of children in American already have it. 12 percent of people with NASH/MASH will go on to have liver cancer. Chronic liver failure due to cirrhosis is the most common reason for liver transplantation and 20 percent of individuals with NASH/MASH progress to advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis caused by NASH. NASH is closely associated with obesity, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is projected to rise in parallel to these diseases. The rising incidence of liver disease and liver cancer poses a significant burden across populations. Among Asian Americans, chronic liver disease is a leading cause of death. African American/black men are 60 percent more likely to have liver and Intrahepatic Bile Duct (IBD) cancer and to die from this disease as compared to non-Hispanic white men. Among the Hispanic/Latino population, chronic liver disease is a leading cause of death. American Indian/Alaska Native women are 2.3 times more likely to have, and 2.2 times as likely to die from, liver & IBD cancer, as compared to non-Hispanic white women. To address the many hurdles that diverse patients with liver cancer across our country face, we need to act now. Up to 70% of liver cancer cases could be prevented with clinical interventions, such as vaccination for hepatitis B virus, treatment for hepatitis C virus, and interventions to slow progression and decrease the impact of advanced fatty liver disease, known as NASH or MASH. We need your support to pass the LIVER Act, so please contact Rumer.LeGendre@mail.house.gov with Representative Velázquez to join this bill as a co-sponsor. Please also urge action on the LIVER Act in committee and support its passage or inclusion in other legislation. Together we can move the field forward and shift the conversation to shine a spotlight on liver cancer.
